5 Out of 5 for Bruce Terrace in Akaroa 🏠
Five social housing units in Akaroa have just achieved Lifemark 5-Star Certification. This complex comprises of five Social Housing units, including four one bedroom units and one two bedroom unit that were specifically designed for its tenants.
We worked with Christchurch City Council and Watts and Hughes. It was great to hear both their perspectives on working with Lifemark®
We asked Christchurch City Council; Why it was important for these five dwellings to achieve Lifemark® Certification?
We wanted the five units to achieve the Lifemark standard to ensure that all units are accessible and enable ageing in place where appropriate. Conscious of the limited affordable and accessible rental accommodation in Akaroa, we see this as a great step forward in the accommodation that the Council offers in Akaroa.
What Benefit do you think the tenants of Bruce Terrace will receive now these dwellings incorporate Universal Design?
We acknowledge that the needs of all persons are different but that the Lifemark standards offer a high degree of design that benefits all people who may live in this new facility. The units are warm, dry, accessible, and incorporate additional storage, are fitted with mobility charging ports, and provide sufficient accessible parking spaces.
Watts and Hughes were the construction company we worked with on this project. It was great to hear their perspective.
What was it like working with the Lifemark® team during the design phase of this project?
The Lifemark team reviewed our design plans in both the design and construction stage to ensure every change we made takes into consideration Universal Design best practice. As a result, the unit layouts and functional features mean occupants will find it easier to live here independently. The final mix is a blend of function and good design that is practical to live in and meets the changing demands of its occupants.
What key recommendations/changes were made for Bruce Terrace to achieve a Lifemark® 5 – star rating?
The utilization of space was important to this project. The kitchen has clear under-bench spaces and all storage has easy access. Thanks to the advice from the Lifemark team, all the units have fully accessible bathrooms and level entrances. The electrical fixtures are at easily reachable heights for all the tenants. These small details will really make a difference for the tenants.
Would you consider working with Lifemark® again on future developments?
Watts & Hughes Ltd is not just a conventional construction company but an innovative pioneer for design and builds projects. Working with Lifemark has definitely helped our design team develop a better understanding of the needs of people with reduced mobility. The team was very helpful throughout the whole project. We look forward to working with Lifemark in the very near future.
Well done to Christchurch City Council and Watts & Hughes on achieving Lifemark® 5- Star certification. We hope the tenants of Bruce Terrace enjoy living in these new dwellings and hope to work with you both on developments in the future.
