Design with Devon Homes; A ‘Candy area’ for new retirees achieves Lifemark®

A Lifemark® rated villa at  Enliven’s Kandahar Village

Lansdowne, Masterton will be the new home of 52 2-bedroom retirement villas and a community centre, Enliven’s Kandahar Village architecturally designed for residents to enjoy the Wairarapa sunshine!

Stage 1 of this village was completed in December last year and it now boasts 12 new villas that have achieved Lifemark® 4-star certification.

The village has been designed by Devon Homes a new Lifemark® Design Partner.

“Devon Homes is a construction and land development company based in Whanganui. We offer town planning, design, and building construction services that cover the ‘full package’ for residential-scale development. Whether its one-off bespoke design/consent/build projects, a complete subdivision or age-care ‘village ‘ like Kandahar in Masterton, we undertake a variety of works and deliver a number of projects.”  Says Tom Robertson Manager at Devon Homes.

Tom saw it as critical to his business to work with Lifemark® to deliver Universal Design in projects like Kandahar Village.

“We work closely with government housing initiatives and private aged-care developments. There is growing demand to provide housing that accommodates all users. We are seeing more and more housing projects where accessibility for the end-user is at the forefront of the design process.” Says Tom

The Lifemark® team added real value to his design process for Kandahar Village.

“Slips, trips and falls can be common in the older age group, so we designed minimal gradients, level entry design, grab rails, and slip resistant flooring into these homes as specified by Lifemark®.”

Tom believed the key areas to get right in  Kandahar Village included “entries, bathrooms, and kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are function spaces, and for the purposes of retirement housing, they needed to be safe and easy spaces to use – especially when it comes to bending down and manoeuvring.”

Lifemark® recommends at least 50% of drawer storage below the bench.

The bottom drawer is raised to a height that is more usable when ‘it comes to bending down.’

New Village resident Pam said “I am so happy to be here and am settling in well. The villa is beautiful, quiet, new, and – just perfect. I do look forward to my time here. It was nice to have a cup of tea today with my near neighbours.”

Kandahar means ‘candy area’ in the Persian language ‘a location for providing fruitful goods’.

Pam’s comments prove the village looks set to be a ‘candy area’ that provides its current and future residents with a fruitful and happy retirement!

Stage 2 of this project is now in the construction phase and is currently going through a review with Lifemark®. Lifemark® is also working with Devon Homes on Enliven’s next retirement village project located behind Levin Home for War Veterans.

It’s great to see Presbyterian Support Central (the charity behind Enliven) and Devon Homes demonstrating top-quality aged care facilities that meet our Lifemark® Universal Design standards.
