Miles Construction: On incorporating cost neutral Universal Design into new builds.

Miles Construction Limited are a New Zealand owned company with offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch offering build, design, renovation/extension and project management services nationwide. From small to multi-million-dollar projects, be it commercial or residential.

Mark Farrell, General Manager, believes “New Zealand needs homes that meet Lifemark®’s Universal Design standards and enable all people to live comfortably.”

“Working with Lifemark® it is considerably cheaper and less disruptive to build Universal Design features into a new home than to retrofit the same house later as research has shown” says Mark.

Miles Construction work with clients in the public and private housing sector. “Being a Lifemark® Design Partner means that we will be able to deliver homes that are adaptable and accessible to all people of abilities at any stage of life. A well-designed house adds value to the homeowner, as well as to our clients.” says Mark

So how will Miles Construction work with Universal Design going forward?

“We will ensure all our designs are ‘fit for purpose’ for the life of the occupant. We will look to include Universal Design features such as grab rails in bathrooms, level entry access to dwellings and making sure fittings and fixtures are located at heights that are easy to reach for all occupants.” says Mark Farrell

Miles Construction built a home that achieved a Lifemark® 5-Star rating in 2016. They built the stunning Lifemark® 5-Star home with another one of our Lifemark® Design Partners, multi award winning Architectural Designer Jason Higham.

Miles Construction are currently working on the construction of projects in both the private and public housing sectors that Lifemark® have given Universal Design best practice guidance on.

Lifemark® have awarded a Provisional 4-Star rating to the Kenderdine Apartments.  These are 18 two-bedroom apartment units (within a development in Papatoetoe) being constructed by Miles.

Two blocks of the Wainui Road terraced development in Silverdale achieved Lifemark® 3-Star Provisional ratings.

These two projects are being built in conjunction with Oaks Living and are for KiwiBuild. They will be designed to meet not just the needs of first home buyers but our ageing population too.

Miles Construction are also building 18 two-bedroom state homes in Blockhouse Bay for Kāinga Ora.

These apartment blocks in Blockhouse Bay will incorporate the bathroom pod design that Lifemark® worked on with Context Architects and Kāinga Ora.

Lifemark® look forward to a continued relationship with Miles Construction. Working together we will not only make a difference to homes in New Zealand’s private and public sector, but more importantly we will improve the lives of the people who live in these homes!
