Star home from Ecostar

This could well be New Zealand’s most sustainable house. The first house in the country to receive both a 5-Star Lifemark™ rating and a 10 Star Homestar rating, from Belvedere Group’s Ecostar Homes range.

Trevor Wilkinson, Managing Director of Belvedere and Ecostar Homes, said this about the build:

“We have probably built more retirement homes than most in New Zealand and recognise that Lifemark™ is a very sensible option in providing the best environment for our ageing population.

“A home or retirement home designed to Lifemark™ Standards really is the future. Aside from the obvious, it’s a better design for those who might need in-house care because you can stay in your home or retirement home for longer without needing to go into hospital.

“There is just no downside to building a Lifemark™ rated home. Even if you don’t need extra accessibility now, there’s nothing wrong with wider doorways or higher plug points. So many elements of a Lifemark™ home benefit everyone, making a home safer and better, even for small children and busy families. It’s the most sensible option out there.

“Working with Lifemark™ was easy – they’re committed people with a vision that we agree with and that made the process really simple.”

The energy-efficient and age-friendly home reached the top Lifemark™ rating by being truly sustainable. The Papamoa home was designed to meet the current and future needs of any tenants, without need for major adaptation, saving money, since homes can be quickly, easily and cheaply adapted to suit the new set of circumstances.

Here, Paul Chapman, senior quantity surveyor for The Belvedere Group, discusses the green elements of the Lifemark™ home:
