Universal Design Audit at Eden Park

Lifemark® conducted a Universal Design audit of New Zealand’s National Stadium, Eden Park in July 2021.

The “street to seat” audit of the south stand of Eden Park was conducted by members of the Lifemark® team and took place over two days.

The stadium was interested in better understanding the requirements of disabled people and how they could deliver a better experience for all users regardless of age, stage, and ability.

In addition, the stadium wanted to ensure it is a “universal venue” as over the next few years Eden Park will host the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, Women’s Rugby World Cup, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The review examined key areas within the stadium including pick-up and drop-off points, mobility parking, circulation areas, seating, sight lines, food and beverage outlets, corporate facilities, first aid and toilet facilities.

Eden Park’s Chief Executive Officer, Nick Sautner, said the stadium wants to “exceed” the expectations of patrons regardless of age or ability and set a “precedent” for other businesses.

“With three world cups in 2022/23, we are committed to ensuring all patrons can have an inclusive, inviting experience at New Zealand’s national stadium,” he said.

The audit will help the Eden Park team to better understand the Eden Park experience from the perspective of users with lived experience of mobility impairment and disability.

The results of the audit are delivered in a Universal Design report that will help guide Eden Park’s future development.
