A Forever Home in Whitianga: How Lifemark® Helped Raewyn and Pete Build for Life

A Forever Home in Whitianga: How Lifemark® Helped Raewyn and Pete Build for Life

When Raewyn and Pete Williams set out to build their dream home in Whitianga, they weren’t just thinking about today – they were planning for the future. With a uniquely shaped section and a vision for a home that would support them and their loved ones for years to come, they discovered Lifemark® – and everything changed.

“Pete was reading an article in a building magazine,” Raewyn recalls. “We were having trouble fitting the house we needed on our site. Lifemark® Certification allowed 40% site coverage instead of 35%, without needing a Resource Consent. That made a big difference.”

Their 740m² section came with strict building envelope restrictions due to its canal frontage and roadside covenants. But with Lifemark®’s support, they were able to design a 295m², open-plan home that not only met their needs, but exceeded them.

Designing for Dignity and Independence

One of the first signs they’d made the right choice came last Christmas, when Raewyn’s mum, who uses a walker, came to stay.

“She was able to move around the house independently,” says Raewyn. “That alone showed us the value of the design.”

The home features two fully tiled, walk-in showers wide enough for wheelchair access, elevated toilets for easier transfers, and even an automated toilet/bidet in the ensuite. The layout includes a private wing that could accommodate a live-in carer in the future.

“Hopefully we can stay out of a rest home!” Raewyn laughs. “That’s the goal.”

No More Trip Hazards – Just Peace of Mind

For Raewyn, level entryways were non-negotiable.

“About 15 years ago, I tripped on a raised door threshold and broke my foot. I was in a moon boot for six weeks – very inconvenient! And my elderly mum broke her femur and shoulder in a similar situation. So having no ‘trip factor’ doorways was really important to me – and probably to our daughters too!”

The home’s level-entry portico deck, seamless indoor-outdoor flow, and ramp access to the canal mean no steps – anywhere. In fact, last Christmas, Raewyn’s 92-year-old mum was able to walk down to the boat with her walker and enjoy a day on the water.

Thoughtful Touches, Lifelong Benefits

From wider hallways and doorways to sensor-controlled lighting and perfectly placed switches and handles, every detail in the home was designed with accessibility and ease in mind.

“We’ve been in the house a year now, and we’re loving it,” says Raewyn. “It’s comfortable, practical, and future-proofed.”

The home has earned a 4-star Lifemark® rating – a testament to its thoughtful, inclusive design.

More Than a Process – A Partnership

Raewyn and Pete also speak highly of their experience working with Lifemark®.

“The process was very simple, and Sarah was fabulous to deal with. She answered every question clearly and promptly. We’ve made a new friend in Sarah – she’s even been to stay!”

Raewyn and Pete’s story is a powerful reminder that great design isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about creating homes that work for everyone, at every stage of life. At Lifemark®, we’re proud to help Kiwis build homes that are not only beautiful, but built for life.
